Very decent steakhouse in Rapid City, SD. I sat at the bar, and was having trouble deciding what cut of steak to get, so I just went omakase style and asked the bartender what he recommended. He said "the buffalo ribeye, medium rare", and I said "make it so!" The ribeye was very good. Not the best buffalo ribeye I've ever had (that distinction goes to the gorgeous piece of meat I had at The White Buffalo in Jackson Hole), but it was damn good. Juicy, sweet, and nicely cooked. I like a little more outside char than what this steak had, but it was still very good. The wedge salad is merely ok. No bacon, and they could have been a little more generous with the blue cheese crumbles. Onion rings are very good - Panko crusted and thick. For dessert, I had the salted caramel cheesecake. It was good, but not fantastic. I'll have to try the kuchen next time I visit.

This is a rustic-elegant Western-gracious restaurant. It is pricey, so we didn't eat any of the steaks for which they are known. Service was efficient and friendly. I just had a hard time paying $48 for a bison filet. For any filet for that matter. WIsh it was a bit less expensive.

Fantastic. Was recommended by the hotel across the parking lot. "Tomahawk style bone in ribeye... Cooked perfectly." Staff does a great job.
My over all experience here was good but could have been better. The apps are limited in choice mostly meat which is pretty much what u have for ur main course. I ordered the Kansas strip medium and received it well done. It was still good but could of been better. If I was in the mood for meat I would return again.
AMBIANCE: Very very nice layout, clean, and inviting. Perfect FOOD: Very good! I had a salad, fried white fish for an appetizer, and the Bison Ribeye (12 oz). I also ordered a lite wheat ale microbrew. SERVICE: My server was very nice, pretty, and attentive. Why didn't I give it 5 Stars? My entree took a little too long to come out. My plate wasn't "hot" like it should've been if the steak just came off the fire but, it wasn't exactly "cold". You could tell it was probably sitting for awhile before it was brought out. I know this seems small reading this, but it definitely killed the momentum. Overall, this is definitely a place to pay a visit. Remember, it may be on the pricier side of the dining equation.

The food was mostly good as my ribeye steak was cooked perfectly and the buffalo skewers were one of the tastiest appetizers I've had in a long time, especially dipped into the spicy asian sauce and the display was quickly posted on instagram for creativity. If you fall into the trap of thinking that the dry aged steak is going to be amazing you may want to reconsider and hopefully you taste something I missed because it unfortunately tasted a little like beef jerky. The salad was good but the soup lacked seasoning, the rolls were good but you could tell they came out of a bag. All in all this is a nice location and most of the food resembles a nice steak house atmosphere but don't expect to be wowed as they may not live up to those expectations.

A mixed experience. First, the table we were seated at was so sticky that the flat wear and napkins stuck to it. Disgusting. Then the server asked if we wanted drinks. One person responded and before others at the table had a chance to answer she nearly left the table without giving anybody else a chance to answer. The server also had trouble getting the orders straight. Food service was very slow. Quality of the food was marginal at best. If this is one of the best steak houses in town eat fish.

Worst dinning experience I have ever had. Steaks were over cooked, service was absolutely terrible, and when I asked to speak to a manager about it I was told that she would not see me. My girlfriend didn't even eat her food and I was still charged for it. Don't go here!! Way too expensive and the service at McDonald's exceeds this place by far!

This could be a really good place but it seems that there is some serious mismanagement happening. We arrived and there were a lot of open tables most of them not bussed. We were told we would have a 30 minute wait so we went to the bar. We finally got a table after about 40 minutes. After we sat down, the service was painfully slow. I do not think that it was the waitresses fault. I ordered a rib eye and it was a really fatty crappie cut. I got tired of chewing and cutting fat so I put it aside. The others at our table said their food was ok. They had different entrees.

I had the pleasure of visiting the restaurant over the 4th of July holiday weekend this year and it was recommended by the airline shuttle driver that took me to my hotel. My friend and I were celebrating birthdays, holidays, and all of the good times wrapped into one dinner and this fit the occasion perfectly. I've never had buffalo and we decided to start with the appetizer skewers with a spicy dipping sauce. The meat was so tender and cooked perfectly. I had the sirloin steak and my counterpart had the buffalo steak as our entrees. Both were delicious and we cleaned our plates the best we could. Of course we had to try the desert options of the kuchen with berries and the apple crisp. I wish I left more room because they were very good but I couldn't finish it all. I enthusiastically recommend trying this restaurant if you are visiting the area and taking in the sites. You won't be disappointed.

I was in South Dakota for work. There aren't a lot of food options in Rapid City outside of some fast food and a few chain restaurants. So I was a little lazy and picked the restaurant across the street from my hotel. What luck! Dakotah Steakhouse was really good. I sat at the bar and everyone is so friendly. I felt like I was having family dinner at someone's house. The servers chat with you and ask your name, (maybe this is a small town thing). I was starving so I ordered some onions rings as an appetizer and the chicken breasts as my main course. The platter, yes platter, of onions rings that they brought out were delicious. They were accompanied by a spicy roumalade. I knew I wasn't going to be able to finish the onion rings. So. Inch food. The chicken breast entree comes with a side salad and bread. My stomach was filling up quick. Then the chicken came out. Tender, juicy and flavorful. I wish I wasn't leaving the next day or I would've taken my leftovers to my hotel and had a delicious lunch the next day. Next time I'm in Rapid City, I'm definitely coming back.

While the restaurant is very nicely appointed, i had a terrible meal when I was there. I ordered the "special" of the evening, a blackened rock fish with sweet potato gnocchi and a dinner salad. When the entree arrived I was certain the server delivered the wrong meal to me so I called her back to the table. On my plate was a burned piece of fish on a bed of diced fried potatoes. The server casually stated that this was the rock fish, but the chef was currently out of the gnocchi so substituted the potatoes without even asking (or telling) me if that would be ok. The fish was burned and dried out due to being grossly overcooked. No apology was issued from the chef, the server or the manager. All in all, I was very disappointed in my very expensive meal.

Took my wife and daughter here for dinner while visiting the area on spring break. Food was excellent. My daughter had the strip (HUGE) and I had the ribeye..both were prepared correctly and had a really good flavor. We came here because it was close to our hotel - it was okay. Our waitress was the best though and if we're ever back in Rapid City we'd come back because of her. I also think they're very accommodating when it comes to big groups. There was a Filipino group there and they made sure that they were seated quickly and served. We thought that was nice.
A lot of hype, very nice inside and out, expensive, the food was not as good as would be expected. I have ate here twice just to make sure the first time wasn't just a fair experience. The place is ok, but there are better places to get a good steak.

I have lived just over the hill from Dakota Steak house for 2 years now, and finally made it there to eat. What had I been thinking waiting so long?! The ambiance was great, I had made reservations and we were seated right away in a beautiful booth by the fireplace. Our waitress was friendly, cheerful, and helpful. We ordered the chislic appetizer and it was seasoned and cooked perfectly. We also had the walleye fingers. If the appetizers were any indication of the steak to come, I knew we were in for a real treat!! I ordered the fillet mignon med/rare and bacon wrapped asparagus. It was divine!! Perfection!! Tender, seasoned, cooked perfectly. I had the salted caramel cheesecake for dessert, very sweet, but DELISH! The wine selection was top notch and the brews kept the hubby happy too. I'd highly recommend this steak house and I will definitely be making the trek over the hill more often now.

After reading the menu I was anxious to check this place out in person. I went alone on a Saturday night to eat at the bar. As I sat I noticed 3-5 groups of people come in and be asked if they had reservations. Most said no and they would have to wait though there were a large number of open tables in the bar area and at the bar itself though they were not offered to eat there. I ordered the prime rib rare which was a tad on the fatty side but still very good. Horseradish was too creamy and had no heat, I think it was out of the bottle, I didn't care much for it. Fried mac and cheese block was awesome as a side and very big. Caesar salad was above average even for a salad. Bread was average. House Cabernet Sauvignon was a bit fruity but still bold maybe a 6.5/10. I would return to try some more menu items and would recommend to a friend. Decor was pretty nice especially for the area. Bartenders seemed somewhat uninterested and not totally up to par on their menu knowledge. My tip to you would be to sit at the bar or bar area to avoid the wait.

Fantastic dinner. I came here two years ago and really enjoyed it. I think it has only gotten better in the past two years. We started with appetizers (fried walleye and chislic). The walleye was good, but the chislic was great. Next I got the Caesar salad; it was delicious. The asiago chips were a nice touch. Next I had the elk ravioli....savory sauce with that subtle truffle flavor. Finally we had a round of desserts...my favorite was the kuchen with berries (never heard of it before). It was amazing.

Passing thru town, I came to Dakodah's looking for an above-average meal close to my hotel. I came alone and at 6pm, anticipating a crowd later in the evening. I ordered the buffalo ribeye, medium rare, with a Caesar salad, grits and the Brazin Zinfandel. Brandi was my server, and she was wonderfully attentive. The salad was decent, a little awkwardly plated but no major complaints. Not overdressed, which I appreciated. The whole anchovy filet was a little unappetizing; I highly recommend cutting it up and tossing it on top of the salad. The Zinfandel was spicy, smokey, deep. Not too in-your-face but tannic at the end. Great wine for red meat. The steak, which arrived super fast, was just barely overdone for med rare by my standards, but then again I prefer my meat bloody. It did get quite dry as the meal progressed. The "grits" I ordered as my side were more like underdone cheesy polenta- not a problem for me as I grew up with polenta but if a diner was expecting grits they would be in for a surprise. Brandi did warn me of this and offered to replace the side if I didn't like it. I asked for the elk ravioli to go, again Brandi was great about asking when I'd like her to put in the order; even being super specific about cooking time. Brandi was super accommodating with my foodie questions and requests, I would def come back although I do agree with other reviewers that this place is quite overpriced for what it is-- KEEP IN MIND that it is located between 3 huge hotels and caters to that customer who wants a decent meal without driving into town. Hence the prices.

My husband and I stopped here for dinner on a road trip and were not impressed. The rolls were clearly frozen and not freshly baked. The honey bourbon butter tasted like margarine. The three sisters soup tasted like baby food with chunks in it (mainly carrot). The flat iron steak was good, but not as good as we cook at home. The baked potato was the only thing we had that was really good. I ordered the buffalo rib, which was OK. It was braised so it was very tender, but the flavor was muted and the sauce was too sweet. The food here is not worth the prices they are charging.

Super tasty cowboy ribeye. It was pittsburgh-styled to deliciousness, juicy, flavorful, not dry, not overcharred, and most importantly, not overcooked. My boyfriend and I shared it and it was just the right amount for us. With the $39 steak for two you get soup/salad with bread and a side. We got the mushroom bread pudding which was strangely really tasty. Definitely something we've never seen before so we had to try it. Only thing I would take stars off for (but won't because the food was so good) would be the exceptional service that you expect from an upper scale steakhouse. I guess this place is just more casual overall and the service was still pretty good. We also tried the buffalo satay skewers as many reviewers suggested....they were pretty tasty, but for $13 compared to the steak....probably not worth it. The steak was really excellent... Don't get the cheapest one...it's just okay.

Some of the food we received that was cooked close to temperature was good but the service was horrible. The timing of the food from appetizers to salads to our meals was pitiful. We were never offered drink refills and the staff never removed a single dish from our table from any course. All the steaks and burgers came undercooked and I sent mine back only to have the chef microwave it and burn it in the salamander. I ended up with an charcoal briquette of rubber and cold sides. The manager was nice enough to adjust my tab for the one steak but it the took 20 more minutes to get the check. So much potential but its obvious most of the staff still needs training.

If you dine at Dakotah, you will have a great meal. I ate there with a large group so I got the opportunity to sample much of the menu. The appetizers we tried were fantastic. The Buffalo satay was tender, delicious, and a generous portion. The fried onion and pepper dish was especially tasty. The batter was light but very flavorful. The salads were all very good and the bread that was served with them was great as well. The entrees were awesome. I had the bone-in ribeye which deserves a review of it's own. The steak is large and served on the whole rib bone. Visually it is stunning and unlike any of the 1000 other ribeyes I've eaten in my time. The steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned with a nice crust. This steak will have your group talking and people wanting to take pictures of your dinner! Accompanying the steaks are very good sides, especially the mushroom bread pudding. I didn't taste anything I didn't like that evening. Dessert, if you have room, is great as well. I'd recommend the apple tart. The restaurant has a great atmosphere and decor. It's casual enough for a family dinner and nice enough for a business meeting. Out front is a beautiful sculpture of a buffalo which is created completely of repurposed metal parts. Also, don't miss the funny sculpture on the back patio. The beer list was great and the prices are very fair. If you're in the Rapid City area visiting Rushmore, on business, or just passing through I'd highly recommend stopping at Dakotah.

I've visited Rapid City several times, so I can say with confidence that if you're looking for a fantastic meal - go to Dakotah Steakhouse. Decor: tasteful modern/Western. The buffalo sculpture out front is a mini-attraction on its own - make sure you take the time to look at the components. There's also a truly delightful statue on the back patio, which is a great space for a drink on a summer evening. Food: I'll agree with the other reviewers that the Buffalo satay exceeded my expectations. It was tender, juicy and flavorful, with a great dipping sauce. For sides - if you like bleu cheese (a strong like, maybe a love), get the bleu cheese mashed potatoes. If you don't, try any one of the other sides. The mushroom bread pudding and the fried mac & cheese (lighter than it sounds) were delicious. As for the steak, I had a filet and it was everything you want it to be. They nailed the medium rare, and the seasoning enhanced the meat without taking over the flavor. For dessert, I had the hot fudge sundae. I think you learn the most about restaurants when you see how they handle simple, classic food - and these people can make a mean hot fudge sundae. If you're in Rapid City, don't miss this place.

First let's just qualify what your getting at Dakotah Steakhouse. Its not Manny's in Minneapolis or Gibson's in Chicago or anything near Peter Luger in New York, but it'll do just fine for Rapid City SD. The food quality is somewhere between Outback and Ruth's Chris, which is probably just fine for the market. I enjoyed my beef rIbeye with a 24" bone sticking out of it! It was under seasoned but they were accommodating when I asked for some garlic & parsley to fix it up. My wife had an Elk Ravioli in mushroom cream sauce that was pretty good. The decor is fairly tacky with a "fancy" log cabin vibe. Like Abe Lincoln built a new lodge just off the I-90 freeway exit. The service was painfully slow, especially from the bar. Seems to be the theme here judging by other reviews. Our server was a very nice young girl, but S L O W and I'm really not that demanding. Whatever, it's fine, just don't go there with high expectations if you are a foodie or looking for a high end steakhouse experience.

I have been here several times previous and have always had a great experience. The buffalo satay is fantastic, you should definitely try it. You used to get a Dakotah Salad as the house but now its an up charge to have it with you steak which was a little irritating. The waitress I got this time should have just given it to me when I asked about it, but she didn't even offer or apologize. The Dakotah Salad is a wonderful salad for people who may not like salads. They have buffalo and beef here. I have had the filet here and the ribeye and the filet was great at my last visit.

Made reservation for large group hours in advance. We were early and had to wait for table. Sitting we were greeted by two staff members who could not figure out how to split checks by family. Drinks took forever. Some meals for kids and adult appetizers did not show up. Food finally arrived 2 hours later and portions were very small and over priced. Food very mediocre. We ate here two nights in a row two weeks ago and that's a real rarity. We got to Rapid City too late last night to make it a third time. The salads are terrific, fresh and large. I had the spinach salad and the buffalo bone for dinner and it was more than I could eat. Fortunately another member of the party also had the buffalo bone so we took the leftovers with us and had fabulous sandwiches for lunch the next day. The buffalo bone is a huge portion, scented with orange, corriander, and juniper berries. Absolutely delectable. The steaks were perfectly cooked. game was creatively prepared. The walleye fingers were a favorite appetizer and were really enough for a meal (great for 2 children). The wine list was reasonably priced and offered good selection. Dining space was warm, service attentive and cheerful. This was one of the best meals in a two week road trip.

Had dinner here last night with 3 others. We didn't know they took reservations and since this is bike week in Sturgis, we expected a long wait. They were able to seat us immediately in their lounge area which was large, with booths as well as regular sized tables. The ambiance is very nice and we all noticed that the music was nicely muted so we could hear it, but still carry on a conversation with each other. Our waiter was great-confident and capable, and never kept us waiting overly long. He was knowledgeable and willing to accommodate any changes to the menu we wanted. The food was very good, and everyone said their steaks were perfect, which was a ribeye, a top sirloin, and a filet mignon. There were lots of interesting choices on the menu and a nice variety of wines, plus a full bar. There was not one thing that we were unhappy about with our experience.

We had dinner at Dakotah Steakhouse last Friday evening after returning from Mount Rushmore. I had read the reviews and was a little hesitant, but we were thrilled with our meal and the service we received. I had the special which was Buffalo Filet served over Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes and Asparagus. DEVINE! The potatoes could have used a tad more salt, but that's just a personal preference and better that the kitchen under-salt a little than use too much. My husband had the beef ribeye with asparagus. His asparagus was wrapped in bacon and grilled. Everything was prepared perfectly. I had creme brulee for dessert and it was heavenly. Our server (so sorry--don't remember his name) was attentive, but not overly so, knowledgeable about the menu, and took special care with DH lactose intolerant requirements. We would definitely eat here again!!

I really enjoyed myself here. I got a great table by the fireplace, which was lucky. I liked the music in the background -- old school country and western -- and the atmosphere in general was very pleasant and relaxing. I thought the lodge decor with the stone features, high ceilings and private booths were charming and modern at the same time. For food, I ordered the buffalo satay skewers, which were delicious, and the presentation was great. I also had the Dakotah salad, which is huge, and some wine. Very nice meal. And, unlike other reviewers, my service was great -- very attentive.

Best prime rib ever! I was in the Dakotas for work and after driving past several thousand cows wandering the countryside, I wanted to try some local beef. We were really lucky that we chose to go to this restaurant on a Sunday because that's the only day they have the prime rib dinner. When it came out, I was surprised to see that it didn't have a highly seasoned crust on the outside (usually the best part of eating prime rib) but the quality of the meat was the best I've ever had. I ate at the famous The Prime Rib in DC two days later and was very disappointed that the quality wasn't even close. The restaurant was quite empty at 7:30. Hopefully that doesn't mean it's not popular with the locals, because I hope it stays open for the next time I happen to be in Rapid City. The beer and wine selection was great and the service was pretty good. The prices might be high for that part of the country, but incredibly cheap compared to DC.

On our summer road trip, we stopped by this place because it was right by our hotel. The interior looks nice. It's pretty cozy and it looks nice (probably because it's new). The chairs.. had wheels? So it was kinda difficult to stay in one place.. kept moving around hahah Okay food. Their butter was so good! I'm pretty sure the menu said it was a honey butter thing they made themselves, but whatever, it was different from the usual and it was really good. I got the filet and asked for medium, but I probably got medium rare. It was real pink and tasted pretty raw. I wish it was cooked more. The rest of my family didn't seem to enjoy their meal that much either. My brother got the sirloin that he wasn't too pleased with. My dad's steak was too raw as well. Their fried mac and cheese side as good too! Overall, it was pretty okay, but it was a bit overpriced for the quality of food we got... anddd I don't live anywhere near South Dakota so I probably will not go again.

We went here because Yelp reviews were very good, and it was close to our hotel. Service was excellent, decor was nice and interesting, with a dark wood + frontier theme. Very neat metal-parts buffalo sculpture out in front. I don't love chairs with wheels, though. Saw a serving of a bone-in ribeye at another table, and I instantly wished I'd ordered it, just for the cool factor - the rib bone was easily 2 feet long, hanging out off the plate. As for what we did order: The others in our party liked their meals - buffalo short ribs, small steaks. The side dishes were interesting and quite tasty. My rib-eye, however, was small, not particularly tender, and overcooked from my requested medium-rare. Not my favorite place, but my companions were happy, hence a compromise rating.

If I were reviewing on the steaks alone I would give them a 5 but as soon as we were seated a fly started buzzing us. The waitress saw my wife flinch when it hit her in the eye. No attempt was made to seat us elsewhere or remove the fly. We could not enjoy our meal for the little rascal dive bombing our plates!
The most amazing food in rapid! Meats are awesome and the desserts are fantastic!

My husband and I had dinner here tonight. It has been years since we have had such an overall excellent experience at a restaurant. The ambiance was warm and relaxing. Each and every item brought to our table, including the rolls and butter, was outstanding. Our wait person was professional and helpful. The salads were fresh and beautiful to see. My husband had the buffalo ribeye done medium rare with a blue cheese demi-glaze that made him swoon. His side of mushroom bread pudding was incredible. I had the walleye with baked potato--yummy! Dessert was an outstanding apple crisp for me and a perfectly cooked creme brulee for my husband. Our recommendation is to plan ahead if you are in a hurry; our wait person had several other tables and so occasionally there was a lag. Certainly we will return, and will urge all of our friends to try it as well.

this is fantastic food for the beef lover. it's more upscale than other steakhouses in the area, but worth it. if the price range is making you leery, it's much cheaper to go during lunch. here's a helpful tip: don't order bison cooked more than medium. seriously, it's just a waste of money if you do. well-done bison is a crime against humanity and people that order it have no sense of taste.

Went there for my girlfriend's birthday. Started off with the buffalo satay and charcuterie plate. The satay may have been the best food of the night - cooked very nicely with a really elegant marinade. The charcuterie plate was just odd - 4-5 tiny slices of buffalo salumi, and then what appeared to be deli ham slices ( we were told it was prosciutto ). The beer selection features a couple of local choices and I went with a relatively bland Canyon Cream ale from Spearfish. For my entree I opted for the walleye special that was prepared in a very brutish style. On a bed of mashed potatos and then covered in panko crumbs, I hardly got a sense of what the fish tasted like. This came across as s very "south dakotan touch" - focus on size and caloric count instead of featuring precise, elegant flavors. The waiter was very nice and provided us with two gratis desert dishes for our birthday celebration. Overall this place has s lot of potential. It features what appears to be a lot of local proteins - I just hope that in the future the chef doesn't overwhelm these great ingredients with preparations that distract the consumer.

This is one great steakhouse, complete with giant animal heads on the wall! I dined with several business associates and we were all very satisfied with the quality and cook on our steaks - and you can't beat bacon-wrapped-asparagus! The service here is impressive as well, and our server made several recommendations for wine pairings with our dinners and desserts.

I am a huge steak fan. Read my reviews, many are steak based. The buck stops right here in rapid city at the Dakotah. I have paid an extra twenty bucks for a steak that only pretends to be this good. Perfect char, saltiness, and marbling. Right there with the big boys, and a lot less money. Please bring this to the bay area, please please.

My family loved their bison burger and Elk ravioli dishes. I had the Prime time ribeye which was no ribeye; more like strip or sirloin. No marbling, very lean, and a bit chewy. I paid extra for this? I should have had the standard ribeye. Overpriced. Their signature three sisters soup was a bit bland for my tastes, but decent. I told them what I thought about the steak and they took it off the bill, but the GM seemed a bit bothered by it (as if I was just trying to get a freebie maybe?) Ribeyes are the only steak I get out, and it simply missed it's $39 mark by a longshot.

We were lucky to find the Dakotah Steakhouse on a recent trip through Rapid City. They had only been open about 5 days and were getting ready for their grand opening. We had a great meal with a wonderful server Tricia! The fillets were excellent and prepared the way we wanted them, medium rare. We had the corn side dish and the sweet potatoes. The corn was good, but the sweet potatoes were excellent! We'd definitely go again.

We showed up right about 6PM and were told there would be a wait. I expected that. but I noticed that the people who showed up who had reservations also had to wait. Excellent Prime Rib. But skip the deep fried mac & cheese. It was a tasteless lump. Bread was stale and I had a tough time tearing it. My wife ordered sauteed mushrooms and onions with her steak. You could count the number of them without removing your shoes. Service was OK once we got seated. My wife and her sister are both experienced in the restaurant business and neither were impressed. Good steak but the rest needs work.

The place is definitely on the pricier side so it's probably better suited to a couple or a family with older children since even the more generic items are also pricey. I wish the menu had more options and perhaps some complimentary bread, but my meal (salmon sandwich with sweet potato fries) was yummy and there were no complaints around the table so we were not disappointed.

My fiance and I just moved to the area and this is our favorite restaurant so far. He ordered the hanger steak, and I ordered the filet mignon, both cooked perfectly medium rare and extremely tender. Went to Dakota steakhouse for our last meal of our family vacation. I brought my wife and two kids. Nice atmosphere and decore gives a slighly upscale feel. Wait staff was excellent and our waitress Anna did a terrific job. We had the buffalo steaks mediuim rare and they were excellent. My daughter's steak was a little overdone. Kid's had a great time with the restaurant provided item list to find on the metal buffalo sculpture out front. Would recommend and would go again if we were in town.

They are a class act. Although a bit pricey, the quality and service are worth it. The BBQ buffalo bone is a very good appetizer. It cannot compete with Texas beef BBQ, but is healthier and quite tasty. The osso bucco is competent but not memorable. While this steakhouse is still somewhat new, everything seemed to be going better than other reviewer's experiences. We had onion rings for starters and they were yummy! My steak was cooked just fine, but my husband's steak was somewhat charred on one side and less cooked on the inside of the steak. The rolls were good and the servers were attentive and pleasant. Our only complaint was that the prices were too high for the food that we ordered.

My husband and I were staying at the Comfort Suites in Rapid City this summer and went here for dinner (it's right on the other side of the parking lot). What an amazing dining experience! Though it looks like something out of the Flintstones, the bison back rib is one of the best things I've ever eaten. 2 months later and I'm still thinking of it. We were staying in near-by hotel and had dinner at Dakotah Steakhouse this evening. I was with my wife and three children. Dakotah Steakhouse seems to aspire to be a mid to high end steak house, which fit with what we were looking for. - We had read other Yelp posts commenting about poor service. Our service was fine, and the food was delivered surprisingly quickly. - Our problem was with the food. Two of the kids had the "steak tips" off of the kids menue. We asked for them medium rare to medium. They were tough and came well done. "Kids meal" though ... so not a big deal. - My oldest child had the buffalo spare ribs off of the adult menu, which was good but were not what we expected. They were more like osso buco than traditional spare ribs. - My wife had a beef filet which was good and cooked to order. - I had the buffalo rib eye, which was priced at ~$35. I was expecting a tasty and juicy buffalo steak as this is South Dakotah which seems like the best possible place to get great buffalo/bison. What arrived was thin (about 3/8" thick), small, and relatively tough. We have gotten much better, thicker, more tender buffalo rib eye steaks at our Costco in Denver. Extreemly dissapointing. - The meals generally come with "bacon rapped asparagus" plus a second side of the diner's choice. The asperagus is a single spear, which seemed really lacking. The choices of other sides are mostly potato oriented, or fried macaroni, or salads. A second green vegetable choice would have been much appreciated. - Lastly, the wine list is a signifigant step up from an Outback Steakhouse, but is other wise uninspired. It does not seem to match what the rest of the Dakotah Steakhouse is aspiring to be (a mid to high end steak house), but not quite achieving.

I visited Dakotah on Monday 6/27 with my family. We were visiting the Rapid City area, and heard of this great new steakhouse opening from some friends in the area. They had not been there yet, but we decided to give it a try. The prices are very high, but we weren't shocked by that. What disappointed us was the poor service, and the AVERAGE food delivered to our table. Upon our arrival we were seated quickly due to our reservation. The waitress (Amy B) came by and distributed menus, and filled our water glasses. Then, she inexplicably removed all the wine glasses from the table, even from me and my wife's spots. We didn't see her for over 10 minutes, and upon her return she didn't offer to take drink orders, she just said "Are you all ready to order?". I indicated we'd like to order wine and drinks for dinner and take a minute on the menus. Although the board entering the restaurant indicated they had specials, Amy B did not once bring it up or offer to explain them to us. She made no suggestions at all on the menu. When she returned with the wine, she didn't bring glasses with her, so she had to run back for wine glasses, AFTER she opened the wine bottle. She said she had cleared them from the table because they had too many broken in the 1st 3 weeks the restaurant had been open. Uh huh. She didn't bring our kids their drinks until just before their meals arrived. I ordered Buffalo ribeye, and it was okay, but not worth the $35 it cost. My wife had a filet, but again not the best we've had, even in Rapid City. One of my daughters had ordered a Cheddar burger, and it came WITHOUT cheddar cheese. We sent it back, and they slapped a slice of cheddar on top and sent it back out. The side dishes were lukewarm at best, probably because they had been dying up at the kitchen waiting for someone to deliver them. And, during the meal, we noticed all the other waitresses bringing their tables fresh bread with their drinks. We received none, and when I asked Amy B, she sort of apologized, but never brought any, nor offered to comp any part of our meal for forgetting. Needless to say, we won't be returning. I'd rather give my business to someone that deserves it like Del Monicos, Enigma, Minervas, or our favorite choice, Botticellis. If the new owners want to stick around long, they had better do a better job of vetting the wait staff.

This place just opened and you could still smell the fresh paint. Our appetizer was the pheasant poppers. Really good giant jalapeno poppers with an awesome crust and great chicken flavor stuffed with cream cheese so amazing well worth it. My husband had the Rib eye Steak, it came with bacon wrapped asparagus and a side. The steak was really amazing cooked perfectly; aged well. The portion was perfect. I had the buffalo short ribs which completely fell apart, so juicy and tender. The BBQ sauce they came in was made with a zesty orange taste, it was just the right touch and not over powering for the buffalo. Last the Kuchen desert, again nailed it. THANKS we will return. A bit pricey but so worth it for the amazing ambiance. The staff is extremely pleasant not in your face, don't bother you while you eat, and execute the delivering of the appetizer to the main course without the main meal being cold or still working on your appetizer! WELL DONE DAKOTAH STEAKHOUSE!

I agree. My husband and I ate there after a 7 hour drive from Denver. I paid my bill with a 100 dollar bill and it took over 15 minutes for the waitress to bring the change! She said they had "trouble breaking the bill!". For a restaurant who charges $35 for steak, I find that hard to believe. The bill was $63 -that's only $37 in change!!!! We won't go back either. The food was good but overpriced.

They have only been open a week and definitely have some kinks to work out. The ambiance is wonderful. The service was very good. Our meals weren't exactly right but I think there is lots of potential here. It was a nice surprise for out first night in the area. The management really needs to be in the floor checking on guests, not sitting down drinking wine at the table next to us. The server had to apologize to us for several issues but a manager never came to our table. Worth a try but give them a few weeks to get their act together.

Tried out the new steakhouse in town, and couldn't have been more disappointed. Service was reasonably friendly, but slow. We both ordered steaks, of course, even with a $27 minimum entree price for a steak. I had ordered mine medium-medium well, and when it arrived, after quite a little wait, it was only medium rare. When they checked on me, I requested that they cook it a bit more. She took the steak, then came back several minutes later, and told me they would have to cook me a new one, as they couldn't put it back on the grill. So I ate my side as my husband ate his steak. 20 minutes later, when he was finished, they brought out my second steak, and it was RARE! The waitress's face just fell when I cut into it... as did mine. I told them never mind - at that point, we ordered a dessert (creme brulee), which they offered on the house. It was just average. They didn't charge me for my steak, but the bill was still $60 for my husband's steak, and our 2 glasses of mine. Trust me, there are much better places to have a steak in Rapid City, and for less money too.

Very decent steakhouse in Rapid City, SD. I sat at the bar, and was having trouble deciding what cut of steak to get, so I just went omakase style and asked the bartender what he recommended. He said "the buffalo ribeye, medium rare", and I said "make it so!" The ribeye was very good. Not the best buffalo ribeye I've ever had (that distinction goes to the gorgeous piece of meat I had at The White Buffalo in Jackson Hole), but it was damn good. Juicy, sweet, and nicely cooked. I like a little more outside char than what this steak had, but it was still very good. The wedge salad is merely ok. No bacon, and they could have been a little more generous with the blue cheese crumbles. Onion rings are very good - Panko crusted and thick. For dessert, I had the salted caramel cheesecake. It was good, but not fantastic. I'll have to try the kuchen next time I visit.

Passing through on a road trip with my fiancé. This place is awesome! Open ceiling to the rafters with a huge fireplace, bar separated from the general seating, and great spacial layout. Not super fancy but in no way feels like a chain. The FOOD: we loved the Panko fried walleye, light and not greasy at all, 7 big pieces in the appetizer. The soup of the day was New England clam chowder, tasty but not like home. The Caesar salad us unique in taste and presentation, I loved the sharp flavors and the anchovy filet! The buffalo ribeye is worth the $45, 12oz cooked perfectly with a warm red center and a slight outer char with one side of choice (go for the blue cheese mashed potatoes). Their bourbon selection is good and wine list is inclusive from $6 a glass to $140 a bottle. A great place on the outskirts of Rapid City.

This is a rustic-elegant Western-gracious restaurant. It is pricey, so we didn't eat any of the steaks for which they are known. Service was efficient and friendly. I just had a hard time paying $48 for a bison filet. For any filet for that matter. WIsh it was a bit less expensive.

SOLID option for DELICIOUS chow in Rapid City, SD! It was our first night ever in South Dakota, so we celebrated the occasion at this local eatery as our initiation into the regional cuisine. The artistic bison sculpture out front is WAY COOL, and an impressive way to greet patrons! A buncha fist pumps in the entry way makes you second guess the negative yelp reviews posted, hah! Country Western vibe inside was expected, but aesthetically pleasing. Tina was our waitress today, a complete joy to interact with and very attentive to our table. We ordered a few things... *STEAKHOUSE ONION RINGS: These are some BIG sized rings! Hefty serving, too! Despite this being beer battered, it had such a great crunch to it, I could just feel my fillings rattling right off! Oh, and that remoulade dipping sauce?!?! It may sound sweet, but its got a tasty kick that kept me dunkin' away. Yum! *KID'S GRILLED CHEESE: No frills standard stuff here. Grilled golden brown with a pretty good layer of cheese, means they know that they're doin'. The light eater claimed with a smile, "This tastes a lot better than my school's!" Must've meant it was good because plate was empty on return. *PHILLY BURGER: This IS an IMPRESSIVE burger! HALF pound of custom ground and mixed beef came out THICK and cooked as requested. Shaved prime rib slices are soft and tender. Easily tore away with every bite. Also comes with sautéed onions, grilled mushrooms, and Monterey Jack cheese, but lil man ixnayed on the peppers. Still couldn't finish this big boy, though, and I happily batted clean up! ALL good :) *BUFFALO RIBEYE STEAK: My first go at buffalo steak and I enjoyed it! 12 oz. prepared as requested (I APPRECIATE when that happens.) throughout the steak. No gaminess to it, but rather, quite flavorful. Succulent & tender at every bite as well. Broccoli was steamed just right. As buffalo has less calories, fat, AND cholesterol than chicken OR fish, I could certainly eat this more often! Yeehah! *WALLEYE: Our first sampling of the native fish of the region so we weren't sure what to expect. I don't know if it was the way they prepared it with their butter sauce, but this fish was really moist & tender. The orange honey sauce topping enhanced the flavor, giving it a good citrus umph. Wifey (family fungus expert) thought the Mushroom Bread Pudding coulda used more mushrooms and less breading. Yes for walleye, pass on their bread pudding, she said. *KID'S FRIED MAC n CHEESE: I thought this was the best mac & cheese EVER with its nice & crunchy shell YET still ooey gooey inside. BUT, it wasn't my order, and Munchkin didn't want anything dealing with the shell. A Mac & Cheese traditionalist, I guess. *TRIPLE BERRY KUCHEN: South Dakota's State dessert is pronounced "cookin'." Another first for us, and of all the kuchen we ended up samplin' during our stay in SD, this was by far THEE BEST. Much lighter than all others we tried and the berries were a refreshing touch. WORTH a stop in! We woulda come back, too, but we had to broaden our local eatery knowledge first. Hopefully we'll have a chance to return in the future ;)

I ordered the Kansas strip medium and received it well done. It was still good but could of been better. If I was in the mood for meat I would return again.

This was my last day visiting in South Dakota so I wanted to have a really good meal this night. Everywhere else I had eaten it was just average. So I went to Yelp to find a good steakhouse in Rapid City. First of all it was great for me because it was so close to my hotel. But the first impressions when you walk into that restaurant are pretty spectacular. It has wonderful decor and atmosphere. Our group was early for our reservation so we all waited at the bar, where everybody was very friendly. While waiting for the rest of the group to arrive I ordered an Alaskan winter beer which I very much enjoyed and onion rings. The onion rings were very good, but my only complaint would have to be is that the serving size is just a little excessive. Once i got to the table I ordered my entrée which was the fillet mignon with mashed potatoes and a salad. The the steak was seasoned and cooked perfectly. And I was surprised I enjoyed the mashed potatoes with blue cheese in them. Overall I'd recommend this restaurant to anybody that wants a great steak or meal while visiting in Rapid City.

AMBIANCE: Very very nice layout, clean, and inviting. Perfect FOOD: Very good! I had a salad, fried white fish for an appetizer, and the Bison Ribeye (12 oz). I also ordered a lite wheat ale microbrew. SERVICE: My server was very nice, pretty, and attentive. Why didn't I give it 5 Stars? My entree took a little too long to come out. My plate wasn't "hot" like it should've been if the steak just came off the fire but, it wasn't exactly "cold". You could tell it was probably sitting for awhile before it was brought out. I know this seems small reading this, but it definitely killed the momentum. Overall, this is definitely a place to pay a visit. Remember, it may be on the pricier side of the dining equation.

Very friendly staff and clean restaurant. The food was mostly good as my ribeye steak was cooked perfectly and the buffalo skewers were one of the tastiest appetizers I've had in a long time, especially dipped into the spicy asian sauce and the display was quickly posted on instagram for creativity. If you fall into the trap of thinking that the dry aged steak is going to be amazing you may want to reconsider and hopefully you taste something I missed because it unfortunately tasted a little like beef jerky. The salad was good but the soup lacked seasoning, the rolls were good but you could tell they came out of a bag. All in all this is a nice location and most of the food resembles a nice steak house atmosphere but don't expect to be wowed as they may not live up to those expectations.

A mixed experience. First, the table we were seated at was so sticky that the flat wear and napkins stuck to it. Disgusting. Then the server asked if we wanted drinks. One person responded and before others at the table had a chance to answer she nearly left the table without giving anybody else a chance to answer. The server also had trouble getting the orders straight. Food service was very slow. Quality of the food was marginal at best. If this is one of the best steak houses in town eat fish.

This could be a really good place but it seems that there is some serious mismanagement happening. We arrived and there were a lot of open tables most of them not bussed. We were told we would have a 30 minute wait so we went to the bar. We finally got a table after about 40 minutes. After we sat down, the service was painfully slow. I do not think that it was the waitresses fault. I ordered a rib eye and it was a really fatty crappie cut. I got tired of chewing and cutting fat so I put it aside. The others at our table said their food was ok. They had different entrees.

I had the pleasure of visiting the restaurant over the 4th of July holiday weekend this year and it was recommended by the airline shuttle driver that took me to my hotel. My friend and I were celebrating birthdays, holidays, and all of the good times wrapped into one dinner and this fit the occasion perfectly. I've never had buffalo and we decided to start with the appetizer skewers with a spicy dipping sauce. The meat was so tender and cooked perfectly. I had the sirloin steak and my counterpart had the buffalo steak as our entrees. Both were delicious and we cleaned our plates the best we could. Of course we had to try the desert options of the kuchen with berries and the apple crisp. I wish I left more room because they were very good but I couldn't finish it all. I enthusiastically recommend trying this restaurant if you are visiting the area and taking in the sites. You won't be disappointed.

The food has always been great and the atmosphere is much more comfortable than other, similar restaurants. I was in South Dakota for work. There aren't a lot of food options in Rapid City outside of some fast food and a few chain restaurants. So I was a little lazy and picked the restaurant across the street from my hotel. What luck! Dakotah Steakhouse was really good. I sat at the bar and everyone is so friendly. I felt like I was having family dinner at someone's house. The servers chat with you and ask your name, (maybe this is a small town thing). I was starving so I ordered some onions rings as an appetizer and the chicken breasts as my main course. The platter, yes platter, of onions rings that they brought out were delicious. They were accompanied by a spicy roumalade. I knew I wasn't going to be able to finish the onion rings. So. Inch food. The chicken breast entree comes with a side salad and bread. My stomach was filling up quick. Then the chicken came out. Tender, juicy and flavorful. I wish I wasn't leaving the next day or I would've taken my leftovers to my hotel and had a delicious lunch the next day. Next time I'm in Rapid City, I'm definitely coming back.

While the restaurant is very nicely appointed, i had a terrible meal when I was there. I ordered the "special" of the evening, a blackened rock fish with sweet potato gnocchi and a dinner salad. When the entree arrived I was certain the server delivered the wrong meal to me so I called her back to the table. On my plate was a burned piece of fish on a bed of diced fried potatoes. The server casually stated that this was the rock fish, but the chef was currently out of the gnocchi so substituted the potatoes without even asking (or telling) me if that would be ok. The fish was burned and dried out due to being grossly overcooked. No apology was issued from the chef, the server or the manager. All in all, I was very disappointed in my very expensive meal.

We drove to Rapid from Sioux Falls. We saw the website and wanted to try this place but I was worried that we looked disheveled by the trip. We were warmly welcomed, discussed the "Dakota" sculpture with the hostess...who gave us an interactive flier about the artist and his work. The pheasant poppers were spicy. I couldn't tell the pheasant was in there. :-( The dip sauce with them was spicy also. I paid a bit extra for the iceburg wedge salad with blue cheese. It was exactly what I was expecting. The elk ravioli was cooked perfectly and had a sauce that balanced all the flavors in the meat and pasta. My boyfriend had the buffalo rib eye. There was a great char on the meat, and it was still cooked med-rare. It was juicy, not gamey. The side dishes were good. Fried Mac and cheese scored #1 for me. Blue cheese mashed potato has good flavor. The bacon wrapped asparagus was least exciting due to overcooked asparagus and undercooked bacon (rubbery, soft bacon). Dessert: kuchen with berries was great. Creme brulé had good flavor but thin sugar crusting. I prefer a hard shell made by piling a good amount of turbano sugar before torching it. Anyway, great food. :)

I have lived just over the hill from Dakota Steak house for 2 years now, and finally made it there to eat. What had I been thinking waiting so long?! The ambiance was great, I had made reservations and we were seated right away in a beautiful booth by the fireplace. Our waitress was friendly, cheerful, and helpful. We ordered the chislic appetizer and it was seasoned and cooked perfectly. We also had the walleye fingers. If the appetizers were any indication of the steak to come, I knew we were in for a real treat!! I ordered the fillet mignon med/rare and bacon wrapped asparagus. It was divine!! Perfection!! Tender, seasoned, cooked perfectly. I had the salted caramel cheesecake for dessert, very sweet, but DELISH! The wine selection was top notch and the brews kept the hubby happy too. I'd highly recommend this steak house and I will definitely be making the trek over the hill more often now.

After reading the menu I was anxious to check this place out in person. I went alone on a Saturday night to eat at the bar. As I sat I noticed 3-5 groups of people come in and be asked if they had reservations. Most said no and they would have to wait though there were a large number of open tables in the bar area and at the bar itself though they were not offered to eat there. I ordered the prime rib rare which was a tad on the fatty side but still very good. Horseradish was too creamy and had no heat, I think it was out of the bottle, I didn't care much for it. Fried mac and cheese block was awesome as a side and very big. Caesar salad was above average even for a salad. Bread was average. House Cabernet Sauvignon was a bit fruity but still bold maybe a 6.5/10. I would return to try some more menu items and would recommend to a friend. Decor was pretty nice especially for the area. Bartenders seemed somewhat uninterested and not totally up to par on their menu knowledge. My tip to you would be to sit at the bar or bar area to avoid the wait.

But the fact you get a choice of salad or soup and one other item with your dinner for around $22 to $35 is well worth it I think for a good meal... The fact is it has real great decor as well and great ambience and people overall, the Service was Fantastic as you can see the pride well taken in this restuaruant and time taken with management to make sure that is well run... Their Wine Selction was incredible....Overall no complaint definately worth checking out and since not a Chain Restauarunt another Big Plus...

Fantastic dinner. I came here two years ago and really enjoyed it. I think it has only gotten better in the past two years. We started with appetizers (fried walleye and chislic). The walleye was good, but the chislic was great. Next I got the Caesar salad; it was delicious. The asiago chips were a nice touch. Next I had the elk ravioli....savory sauce with that subtle truffle flavor. Finally we had a round of desserts...my favorite was the kuchen with berries (never heard of it before). It was amazing.

Passing thru town, I came to Dakodah's looking for an above-average meal close to my hotel. I came alone and at 6pm, anticipating a crowd later in the evening. I ordered the buffalo ribeye, medium rare, with a Caesar salad, grits and the Brazin Zinfandel. Brandi was my server, and she was wonderfully attentive. The salad was decent, a little awkwardly plated but no major complaints. Not overdressed, which I appreciated. The whole anchovy filet was a little unappetizing; I highly recommend cutting it up and tossing it on top of the salad. The Zinfandel was spicy, smokey, deep. Not too in-your-face but tannic at the end. Great wine for red meat. The steak, which arrived super fast, was just barely overdone for med rare by my standards, but then again I prefer my meat bloody. It did get quite dry as the meal progressed. The "grits" I ordered as my side were more like underdone cheesy polenta- not a problem for me as I grew up with polenta but if a diner was expecting grits they would be in for a surprise. Brandi did warn me of this and offered to replace the side if I didn't like it. I asked for the elk ravioli to go, again Brandi was great about asking when I'd like her to put in the order; even being super specific about cooking time. Brandi was super accommodating with my foodie questions and requests, I would def come back although I do agree with other reviewers that this place is quite overpriced for what it is-- KEEP IN MIND that it is located between 3 huge hotels and caters to that customer who wants a decent meal without driving into town. Hence the prices.

My husband and I stopped here for dinner on a road trip and were not impressed. The rolls were clearly frozen and not freshly baked. The honey bourbon butter tasted like margarine. The three sisters soup tasted like baby food with chunks in it (mainly carrot). The flat iron steak was good, but not as good as we cook at home. The baked potato was the only thing we had that was really good. I ordered the buffalo rib, which was OK. It was braised so it was very tender, but the flavor was muted and the sauce was too sweet. The food here is not worth the prices they are charging.

Super tasty cowboy ribeye. It was pittsburgh-styled to deliciousness, juicy, flavorful, not dry, not overcharred, and most importantly, not overcooked. My boyfriend and I shared it and it was just the right amount for us. With the $39 steak for two you get soup/salad with bread and a side. We got the mushroom bread pudding which was strangely really tasty. Definitely something we've never seen before so we had to try it. Only thing I would take stars off for (but won't because the food was so good) would be the exceptional service that you expect from an upper scale steakhouse. I guess this place is just more casual overall and the service was still pretty good. We also tried the buffalo satay skewers as many reviewers suggested....they were pretty tasty, but for $13 compared to the steak....probably not worth it. The steak was really excellent... Don't get the cheapest one...it's just okay.

Some of the food we received that was cooked close to temperature was good but the service was horrible. The timing of the food from appetizers to salads to our meals was pitiful. We were never offered drink refills and the staff never removed a single dish from our table from any course. All the steaks and burgers came undercooked and I sent mine back only to have the chef microwave it and burn it in the salamander. I ended up with an charcoal briquette of rubber and cold sides. The manager was nice enough to adjust my tab for the one steak but it the took 20 more minutes to get the check. So much potential but its obvious most of the staff still needs training.

If you dine at Dakotah, you will have a great meal. I ate there with a large group so I got the opportunity to sample much of the menu. The appetizers we tried were fantastic. The Buffalo satay was tender, delicious, and a generous portion. The fried onion and pepper dish was especially tasty. The batter was light but very flavorful. The salads were all very good and the bread that was served with them was great as well. The entrees were awesome. I had the bone-in ribeye which deserves a review of it's own. The steak is large and served on the whole rib bone. Visually it is stunning and unlike any of the 1000 other ribeyes I've eaten in my time. The steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned with a nice crust. This steak will have your group talking and people wanting to take pictures of your dinner! Accompanying the steaks are very good sides, especially the mushroom bread pudding. I didn't taste anything I didn't like that evening. Dessert, if you have room, is great as well. I'd recommend the apple tart. The restaurant has a great atmosphere and decor. It's casual enough for a family dinner and nice enough for a business meeting. Out front is a beautiful sculpture of a buffalo which is created completely of repurposed metal parts. Also, don't miss the funny sculpture on the back patio. The beer list was great and the prices are very fair. If you're in the Rapid City area visiting Rushmore, on business, or just passing through I'd highly recommend stopping at Dakotah.

I've visited Rapid City several times, so I can say with confidence that if you're looking for a fantastic meal - go to Dakotah Steakhouse. Decor: tasteful modern/Western. The buffalo sculpture out front is a mini-attraction on its own - make sure you take the time to look at the components. There's also a truly delightful statue on the back patio, which is a great space for a drink on a summer evening. Food: I'll agree with the other reviewers that the Buffalo satay exceeded my expectations. It was tender, juicy and flavorful, with a great dipping sauce. For sides - if you like bleu cheese (a strong like, maybe a love), get the bleu cheese mashed potatoes. If you don't, try any one of the other sides. The mushroom bread pudding and the fried mac & cheese (lighter than it sounds) were delicious. As for the steak, I had a filet and it was everything you want it to be. They nailed the medium rare, and the seasoning enhanced the meat without taking over the flavor. For dessert, I had the hot fudge sundae. I think you learn the most about restaurants when you see how they handle simple, classic food - and these people can make a mean hot fudge sundae. If you're in Rapid City, don't miss this place.

First let's just qualify what your getting at Dakotah Steakhouse. Its not Manny's in Minneapolis or Gibson's in Chicago or anything near Peter Luger in New York, but it'll do just fine for Rapid City SD. The food quality is somewhere between Outback and Ruth's Chris, which is probably just fine for the market. I enjoyed my beef rIbeye with a 24" bone sticking out of it! It was under seasoned but they were accommodating when I asked for some garlic & parsley to fix it up. My wife had an Elk Ravioli in mushroom cream sauce that was pretty good. The decor is fairly tacky with a "fancy" log cabin vibe. Like Abe Lincoln built a new lodge just off the I-90 freeway exit. The service was painfully slow, especially from the bar. Seems to be the theme here judging by other reviews. Our server was a very nice young girl, but S L O W and I'm really not that demanding. Whatever, it's fine, just don't go there with high expectations if you are a foodie or looking for a high end steakhouse experience.

I have been here several times previous and have always had a great experience. The buffalo satay is fantastic, you should definitely try it. You used to get a Dakotah Salad as the house but now its an up charge to have it with you steak which was a little irritating. The waitress I got this time should have just given it to me when I asked about it, but she didn't even offer or apologize. The Dakotah Salad is a wonderful salad for people who may not like salads. They have buffalo and beef here. I have had the filet here and the ribeye and the filet was great at my last visit.

Our waiter was excellent. Very nice atmosphere. Food presentation was really nice and done in a way I had not seen before. We liked the food, but didn't find the flavors were extra special, just good. Our table had a burger, onion rings (big but bland) with a mustard dip, chislic and two desserts, apple crisp (very good) and kuchen. The kuchen was not prepared in the traditional way and I didn't care for it in this more custard pie form. Had a local beer, Canyon Cream Ale from Spearfish, if you like light beers, try it, I thought it was pretty good.

Made reservation for large group hours in advance. We were early and had to wait for table. Sitting we were greeted by two staff members who could not figure out how to split checks by family. We ate here two nights in a row two weeks ago and that's a real rarity. We got to Rapid City too late last night to make it a third time. The salads are terrific, fresh and large. I had the spinach salad and the buffalo bone for dinner and it was more than I could eat. Fortunately another member of the party also had the buffalo bone so we took the leftovers with us and had fabulous sandwiches for lunch the next day. The buffalo bone is a huge portion, scented with orange, corriander, and juniper berries. Absolutely delectable. The steaks were perfectly cooked. game was creatively prepared. The walleye fingers were a favorite appetizer and were really enough for a meal (great for 2 children). The wine list was reasonably priced and offered good selection. Dining space was warm, service attentive and cheerful. This was one of the best meals in a two week road trip.

Had dinner here last night with 3 others. We didn't know they took reservations and since this is bike week in Sturgis, we expected a long wait. They were able to seat us immediately in their lounge area which was large, with booths as well as regular sized tables. The ambiance is very nice and we all noticed that the music was nicely muted so we could hear it, but still carry on a conversation with each other. Our waiter was great-confident and capable, and never kept us waiting overly long. He was knowledgeable and willing to accommodate any changes to the menu we wanted. The food was very good, and everyone said their steaks were perfect, which was a ribeye, a top sirloin, and a filet mignon. There were lots of interesting choices on the menu and a nice variety of wines, plus a full bar. There was not one thing that we were unhappy about with our experience.

We had dinner at Dakotah Steakhouse last Friday evening after returning from Mount Rushmore. I had read the reviews and was a little hesitant, but we were thrilled with our meal and the service we received. I had the special which was Buffalo Filet served over Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes and Asparagus. DEVINE! The potatoes could have used a tad more salt, but that's just a personal preference and better that the kitchen under-salt a little than use too much. My husband had the beef ribeye with asparagus. His asparagus was wrapped in bacon and grilled. Everything was prepared perfectly. I had creme brulee for dessert and it was heavenly. Our server (so sorry--don't remember his name) was attentive, but not overly so, knowledgeable about the menu, and took special care with DH lactose intolerant requirements. We would definitely eat here again!!

I really enjoyed myself here. I got a great table by the fireplace, which was lucky. I liked the music in the background -- old school country and western -- and the atmosphere in general was very pleasant and relaxing. I thought the lodge decor with the stone features, high ceilings and private booths were charming and modern at the same time. For food, I ordered the buffalo satay skewers, which were delicious, and the presentation was great. I also had the Dakotah salad, which is huge, and some wine. Very nice meal. And, unlike other reviewers, my service was great -- very attentive.

Best prime rib ever! I was in the Dakotas for work and after driving past several thousand cows wandering the countryside, I wanted to try some local beef. We were really lucky that we chose to go to this restaurant on a Sunday because that's the only day they have the prime rib dinner. When it came out, I was surprised to see that it didn't have a highly seasoned crust on the outside (usually the best part of eating prime rib) but the quality of the meat was the best I've ever had. I ate at the famous The Prime Rib in DC two days later and was very disappointed that the quality wasn't even close. The restaurant was quite empty at 7:30. Hopefully that doesn't mean it's not popular with the locals, because I hope it stays open for the next time I happen to be in Rapid City. The beer and wine selection was great and the service was pretty good. The prices might be high for that part of the country, but incredibly cheap compared to DC.

On our summer road trip, we stopped by this place because it was right by our hotel. The interior looks nice. It's pretty cozy and it looks nice (probably because it's new). The chairs.. had wheels? So it was kinda difficult to stay in one place.. kept moving around hahah Okay food. Their butter was so good! I'm pretty sure the menu said it was a honey butter thing they made themselves, but whatever, it was different from the usual and it was really good. I got the filet and asked for medium, but I probably got medium rare. It was real pink and tasted pretty raw. I wish it was cooked more. The rest of my family didn't seem to enjoy their meal that much either. My brother got the sirloin that he wasn't too pleased with. My dad's steak was too raw as well. Their fried mac and cheese side as good too! Overall, it was pretty okay, but it was a bit overpriced for the quality of food we got... anddd I don't live anywhere near South Dakota so I probably will not go again.

We went here because Yelp reviews were very good, and it was close to our hotel. Service was excellent, decor was nice and interesting, with a dark wood + frontier theme. Very neat metal-parts buffalo sculpture out in front. I don't love chairs with wheels, though. Saw a serving of a bone-in ribeye at another table, and I instantly wished I'd ordered it, just for the cool factor - the rib bone was easily 2 feet long, hanging out off the plate. As for what we did order: The others in our party liked their meals - buffalo short ribs, small steaks. The side dishes were interesting and quite tasty. My rib-eye, however, was small, not particularly tender, and overcooked from my requested medium-rare. Not my favorite place, but my companions were happy, hence a compromise rating.

If I were reviewing on the steaks alone I would give them a 5 but as soon as we were seated a fly started buzzing us. The waitress saw my wife flinch when it hit her in the eye. No attempt was made to seat us elsewhere or remove the fly. We could not enjoy our meal for the little rascal dive bombing our plates!

Seriously, many of you must have drank a bunch of wine. Or you have never really been out to a decent restaurant and experienced what a professional team prepares for a steak dinner. You will not experience that here. VERY cool décor. Poor service, below-average food. Take a trip south some time, maybe Oklahoma or TX. And get a fresh steak. Until then, just enjoy the McDonalds fish bites - that's the best you're gonna do here. Low expectations on the service so you're okay there. BYOB.

My husband and I had dinner here tonight. It has been years since we have had such an overall excellent experience at a restaurant. The ambiance was warm and relaxing. Each and every item brought to our table, including the rolls and butter, was outstanding. Our wait person was professional and helpful. The salads were fresh and beautiful to see. My husband had the buffalo ribeye done medium rare with a blue cheese demi-glaze that made him swoon. His side of mushroom bread pudding was incredible. I had the walleye with baked potato--yummy! Dessert was an outstanding apple crisp for me and a perfectly cooked creme brulee for my husband. Our recommendation is to plan ahead if you are in a hurry; our wait person had several other tables and so occasionally there was a lag. Certainly we will return, and will urge all of our friends to try it as well.

this is fantastic food for the beef lover. it's more upscale than other steakhouses in the area, but worth it. if the price range is making you leery, it's much cheaper to go during lunch. here's a helpful tip: don't order bison cooked more than medium. seriously, it's just a waste of money if you do. well-done bison is a crime against humanity and people that order it have no sense of taste.

Went there for my girlfriend's birthday. Started off with the buffalo satay and charcuterie plate. The satay may have been the best food of the night - cooked very nicely with a really elegant marinade. The charcuterie plate was just odd - 4-5 tiny slices of buffalo salumi, and then what appeared to be deli ham slices ( we were told it was prosciutto ). The beer selection features a couple of local choices and I went with a relatively bland Canyon Cream ale from Spearfish. For my entree I opted for the walleye special that was prepared in a very brutish style. On a bed of mashed potatos and then covered in panko crumbs, I hardly got a sense of what the fish tasted like. This came across as s very "south dakotan touch" - focus on size and caloric count instead of featuring precise, elegant flavors. The waiter was very nice and provided us with two gratis desert dishes for our birthday celebration. Overall this place has s lot of potential. It features what appears to be a lot of local proteins - I just hope that in the future the chef doesn't overwhelm these great ingredients with preparations that distract the consumer.

This is one great steakhouse, complete with giant animal heads on the wall! I dined with several business associates and we were all very satisfied with the quality and cook on our steaks - and you can't beat bacon-wrapped-asparagus! The service here is impressive as well, and our server made several recommendations for wine pairings with our dinners and desserts.

We had a great experience here. Bell pepper appetizer had a unique deep fried coating, and the steak and potato soup was very good. I am a huge steak fan. Read my reviews, many are steak based. The buck stops right here in rapid city at the Dakotah. I have paid an extra twenty bucks for a steak that only pretends to be this good. Perfect char, saltiness, and marbling. Right there with the big boys, and a lot less money. Please bring this to the bay area, please please.

My family loved their bison burger and Elk ravioli dishes. I had the Prime time ribeye which was no ribeye; more like strip or sirloin. No marbling, very lean, and a bit chewy. I paid extra for this? I should have had the standard ribeye. Overpriced. Their signature three sisters soup was a bit bland for my tastes, but decent. I told them what I thought about the steak and they took it off the bill, but the GM seemed a bit bothered by it (as if I was just trying to get a freebie maybe?) Ribeyes are the only steak I get out, and it simply missed it's $39 mark by a longshot.

We were lucky to find the Dakotah Steakhouse on a recent trip through Rapid City. They had only been open about 5 days and were getting ready for their grand opening. We had a great meal with a wonderful server Tricia! The fillets were excellent and prepared the way we wanted them, medium rare. We had the corn side dish and the sweet potatoes. The corn was good, but the sweet potatoes were excellent! We'd definitely go again.

We showed up right about 6PM and were told there would be a wait. I expected that. but I noticed that the people who showed up who had reservations also had to wait. Excellent Prime Rib. But skip the deep fried mac & cheese. It was a tasteless lump. Bread was stale and I had a tough time tearing it. My wife ordered sauteed mushrooms and onions with her steak. You could count the number of them without removing your shoes. Service was OK once we got seated. My wife and her sister are both experienced in the restaurant business and neither were impressed. Good steak but the rest needs work.

The place is definitely on the pricier side so it's probably better suited to a couple or a family with older children since even the more generic items are also pricey. I wish the menu had more options and perhaps some complimentary bread, but my meal (salmon sandwich with sweet potato fries) was yummy and there were no complaints around the table so we were not disappointed.

Service was good. Food was not the quality expected for a higher class place. Both our steaks were overlooked horribly. How can a steakhouse ruin a filet minon? Mine arrived with a messy plate (Obviously steak did not rest, probably couldn't since they cooked it too long). Soup tasted like they poured half a salt shaker in it. The chef obviously does not know what broccolini is.

My fiance and I just moved to the area and this is our favorite restaurant so far. He ordered the hanger steak, and I ordered the filet mignon, both cooked perfectly medium rare and extremely tender. Went to Dakota steakhouse for our last meal of our family vacation. I brought my wife and two kids. Nice atmosphere and decore gives a slighly upscale feel. Wait staff was excellent and our waitress Anna did a terrific job. We had the buffalo steaks mediuim rare and they were excellent. My daughter's steak was a little overdone. Kid's had a great time with the restaurant provided item list to find on the metal buffalo sculpture out front. Would recommend and would go again if we were in town.

They are a class act. Although a bit pricey, the quality and service are worth it. The BBQ buffalo bone is a very good appetizer. It cannot compete with Texas beef BBQ, but is healthier and quite tasty. The osso bucco is competent but not memorable. Their salmon is perfectly prepared and delicious and the fried mac and cheese side is wonderful. We are looking forward to returning for more selections.

While this steakhouse is still somewhat new, everything seemed to be going better than other reviewer's experiences. We had onion rings for starters and they were yummy! My steak was cooked just fine, but my husband's steak was somewhat charred on one side and less cooked on the inside of the steak. The rolls were good and the servers were attentive and pleasant. Our only complaint was that the prices were too high for the food that we ordered.

My husband and I were staying at the Comfort Suites in Rapid City this summer and went here for dinner (it's right on the other side of the parking lot). What an amazing dining experience! Though it looks like something out of the Flintstones, the bison back rib is one of the best things I've ever eaten. 2 months later and I'm still thinking of it. To me, Mount Rushmore is something you only need to see once, but I would come back to Rapid City just to eat here!

We were staying in near-by hotel and had dinner at Dakotah Steakhouse this evening. I was with my wife and three children. Dakotah Steakhouse seems to aspire to be a mid to high end steak house, which fit with what we were looking for. - We had read other Yelp posts commenting about poor service. Our service was fine, and the food was delivered surprisingly quickly. - Our problem was with the food. Two of the kids had the "steak tips" off of the kids menue. We asked for them medium rare to medium. They were tough and came well done. "Kids meal" though ... so not a big deal. - My oldest child had the buffalo spare ribs off of the adult menu, which was good but were not what we expected. They were more like osso buco than traditional spare ribs. - My wife had a beef filet which was good and cooked to order. - I had the buffalo rib eye, which was priced at ~$35. I was expecting a tasty and juicy buffalo steak as this is South Dakotah which seems like the best possible place to get great buffalo/bison. What arrived was thin (about 3/8" thick), small, and relatively tough. We have gotten much better, thicker, more tender buffalo rib eye steaks at our Costco in Denver. Extreemly dissapointing. - The meals generally come with "bacon rapped asparagus" plus a second side of the diner's choice. The asperagus is a single spear, which seemed really lacking. The choices of other sides are mostly potato oriented, or fried macaroni, or salads. A second green vegetable choice would have been much appreciated. - Lastly, the wine list is a signifigant step up from an Outback Steakhouse, but is other wise uninspired. It does not seem to match what the rest of the Dakotah Steakhouse is aspiring to be (a mid to high end steak house), but not quite achieving.

I visited Dakotah on Monday 6/27 with my family. We were visiting the Rapid City area, and heard of this great new steakhouse opening from some friends in the area. They had not been there yet, but we decided to give it a try. The prices are very high, but we weren't shocked by that. What disappointed us was the poor service, and the AVERAGE food delivered to our table. Upon our arrival we were seated quickly due to our reservation. The waitress (Amy B) came by and distributed menus, and filled our water glasses. Then, she inexplicably removed all the wine glasses from the table, even from me and my wife's spots. We didn't see her for over 10 minutes, and upon her return she didn't offer to take drink orders, she just said "Are you all ready to order?". I indicated we'd like to order wine and drinks for dinner and take a minute on the menus. Although the board entering the restaurant indicated they had specials, Amy B did not once bring it up or offer to explain them to us. She made no suggestions at all on the menu. When she returned with the wine, she didn't bring glasses with her, so she had to run back for wine glasses, AFTER she opened the wine bottle. She said she had cleared them from the table because they had too many broken in the 1st 3 weeks the restaurant had been open. Uh huh. She didn't bring our kids their drinks until just before their meals arrived. I ordered Buffalo ribeye, and it was okay, but not worth the $35 it cost. My wife had a filet, but again not the best we've had, even in Rapid City. One of my daughters had ordered a Cheddar burger, and it came WITHOUT cheddar cheese. We sent it back, and they slapped a slice of cheddar on top and sent it back out. The side dishes were lukewarm at best, probably because they had been dying up at the kitchen waiting for someone to deliver them. And, during the meal, we noticed all the other waitresses bringing their tables fresh bread with their drinks. We received none, and when I asked Amy B, she sort of apologized, but never brought any, nor offered to comp any part of our meal for forgetting. Needless to say, we won't be returning. I'd rather give my business to someone that deserves it like Del Monicos, Enigma, Minervas, or our favorite choice, Botticellis. If the new owners want to stick around long, they had better do a better job of vetting the wait staff.

This place just opened and you could still smell the fresh paint. Our appetizer was the pheasant poppers. Really good giant jalapeno poppers with an awesome crust and great chicken flavor stuffed with cream cheese so amazing well worth it. My husband had the Rib eye Steak, it came with bacon wrapped asparagus and a side. The steak was really amazing cooked perfectly; aged well. The portion was perfect. I had the buffalo short ribs which completely fell apart, so juicy and tender. The BBQ sauce they came in was made with a zesty orange taste, it was just the right touch and not over powering for the buffalo. Last the Kuchen desert, again nailed it. THANKS we will return. A bit pricey but so worth it for the amazing ambiance. The staff is extremely pleasant not in your face, don't bother you while you eat, and execute the delivering of the appetizer to the main course without the main meal being cold or still working on your appetizer! WELL DONE DAKOTAH STEAKHOUSE!

I agree. My husband and I ate there after a 7 hour drive from Denver. I paid my bill with a 100 dollar bill and it took over 15 minutes for the waitress to bring the change! She said they had "trouble breaking the bill!". For a restaurant who charges $35 for steak, I find that hard to believe. The bill was $63 -that's only $37 in change!!!! We won't go back either. The food was good but overpriced.

They have only been open a week and definitely have some kinks to work out. The ambiance is wonderful. The service was very good. Our meals weren't exactly right but I think there is lots of potential here. It was a nice surprise for out first night in the area. The management really needs to be in the floor checking on guests, not sitting down drinking wine at the table next to us. The server had to apologize to us for several issues but a manager never came to our table. Worth a try but give them a few weeks to get their act together.

Tried out the new steakhouse in town, and couldn't have been more disappointed. Service was reasonably friendly, but slow. We both ordered steaks, of course, even with a $27 minimum entree price for a steak. I had ordered mine medium-medium well, and when it arrived, after quite a little wait, it was only medium rare. When they checked on me, I requested that they cook it a bit more. She took the steak, then came back several minutes later, and told me they would have to cook me a new one, as they couldn't put it back on the grill. So I ate my side as my husband ate his steak. 20 minutes later, when he was finished, they brought out my second steak, and it was RARE! The waitress's face just fell when I cut into it... as did mine. I told them never mind - at that point, we ordered a dessert (creme brulee), which they offered on the house. It was just average. They didn't charge me for my steak, but the bill was still $60 for my husband's steak, and our 2 glasses of mine. Trust me, there are much better places to have a steak in Rapid City, and for less money too.
